metric tons of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate per year
BASF, Geismar When BASF pursued the final phase of a multi-part expansion to double methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) production capacity, the company looked at the Baton Rouge Area for its strategic location, skilled workforce, strong logistics infrastructure, and competitive incentive packages. In 2022, BASF selected Geismar, LA, for its $780 million chemical manufacturing complex expansion. This new phase created 37 direct new jobs and 147 indirect jobs, while retaining over 1,000 existing positions, enhancing production capacity to meet growing North American demand.
BASF Advances Major Expansion at its Geismar Facility
Since the initial announcement, BASF broke ground in January 2023 on the third and final phase of its MDI expansion project at its Geismar site, representing a total investment of approximately $1 billion. The multi-phase project, underway since 2018, will increase production capacity to roughly 600,000 metric tons per year by the middle of the decade, supporting growing demand across key industries including automotive, construction, and consumer goods. Once complete, the expansion will mark BASF’s largest wholly owned investment in North America, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to Louisiana and its role as a global leader in advanced manufacturing and chemical production.
