When Methanex pursued an expansion with new production facilities, the company looked at the Baton Rouge area for its skilled workforce, competitive natural gas prices, robust logistics infrastructure, and strong chemical manufacturing ecosystem. In 2012, Methanex, the world’s largest supplier of methanol, announced plans to relocate a methanol plant from Chile to Geismar, Louisiana, marking the company’s initial investment in Ascension Parish. In 2013, Methanex expanded that commitment with a second announcement—a $550 million investment to relocate an additional methanol plant to the same site and began production in 2015.
To secure and support its investments, the state of Louisiana provided Methanex with competitive incentive packages, including performance-based infrastructure grants, the Industrial Tax Exemption Program, the Quality Jobs program, and workforce development support through LED FastStart®. State, regional, and local partners collaborated closely to position Ascension Parish as an ideal location for methanol production.
A Global Force in the Energy Sector
Building on the success of its initial investments, Methanex announced a third major expansion in 2019 with the development of its G3 methanol plant in Geismar, which began operations in 2024. The project represents a $1.3 billion to $1.4 billion capital investment and leverages advanced production technology to significantly increase output. The G3 facility produces up to 1.8 million metric tons of methanol annually and created 62 new direct jobs, along with 301 indirect jobs and more than 1,000 construction jobs during development.
With the addition of the G3 plant, Methanex’s total investment in Ascension Parish exceeds $2.5 billion, establishing one of the largest methanol production complexes in the world. The Geismar site now has the capacity to produce approximately 4 million metric tons of methanol annually. Across its operations, Methanex supports approximately 230 direct jobs in the Capital Region. The company’s presence has strengthened Louisiana’s leadership in the global chemical and energy sectors, supporting downstream manufacturing and expanding the use of methanol in fuels, plastics, and industrial products.
“Louisiana is a very attractive location for methanol production and the state’s investment attraction programs provide an excellent backdrop for this additional investment. As the global leader in the methanol industry, we evaluate growth opportunities around the world, and we are pleased that Ascension Parish will become home to our largest production site globally.”
