Shintech is a Japan-based business that manufactures polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resins, vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), and caustic soda. The company specializes in PVC production and chemical manufacturing and serves customers in North America and global markets.
When Shintech pursued an expansion with a new ethylene production facility, the company looked at the Baton Rouge Area for its skilled workforce, strong infrastructure, and supportive business climate. In 2015, Shintech selected Plaquemine, LA for its $1.4 billion ethylene production plant. This new facility created 100 new direct jobs and enhanced the company’s ability to supply its PVC manufacturing operations with a critical raw material, improving efficiency and expanding production capacity.
Since the announcement, Shintech has continued its growth trajectory, launching additional expansions in 2018 and 2021 totaling nearly $2.8 billion in further investments to develop new chlor-alkali, VCM, PVC production, and packaging facilities in Iberville and West Baton Rouge Parishes. The company has added over 250 new jobs since 2015 and maintained a strong commitment to hiring locally and contributing to the regional economy. To secure Shintech’s expansions, the State of Louisiana offered competitive incentive packages, including the comprehensive workforce solutions of LED FastStart®, Modernization Tax Credits, and a performance-based grant to support infrastructure improvements, along with access to the state’s Quality Jobs and Industrial Tax Exemption programs.
