When Pennington Biomedical pursued an expansion to establish a new bariatric and metabolic surgery center, the organization looked at the Baton Rouge Area for its clinical excellence, academic infrastructure, and strong public-private partnerships. In 2019, Pennington Biomedical selected Baton Rouge, LA, for its $5.9 million Bariatric and Metabolic Institute in partnership with Our Lady of the Lake. The project is led by renowned surgeon Dr. Phil Schauer and is designed to integrate clinical care, research, and advanced surgical treatment for obesity and metabolic disease.
The center is expected to create 55 new direct jobs with an average salary of $125,000. The project also aims to position Baton Rouge as a global destination for obesity treatment and metabolic research.
Innovating Metabolic Treatment
Since its announcement in 2019, the bariatric and metabolic surgery initiative at Pennington Biomedical has evolved into a nationally recognized model for integrated care and research. In 2022, the center officially opened as the Metamor Institute, a 10,000-square-foot facility that brings together clinical care, research, and patient support under one roof through a unique partnership with Our Lady of the Lake and LSU Health New Orleans.
The institute has already demonstrated significant momentum—serving more than 6,200 patients and performing hundreds of procedures—while expanding access to life-changing treatments for obesity and diabetes. Designed to function as both a clinical hub and research engine, Metamor is advancing new treatment approaches, workforce training, and technology development.
Beyond patient outcomes, the project is delivering substantial economic and regional impact. The center is projected to generate more than $100 million in economic activity through research funding, increased medical tourism, and innovation in treatment and care delivery. As it continues to grow, Metamor is positioning Baton Rouge as a leading destination for metabolic health, reinforcing the region’s strength in health and life sciences and its ability to translate research into real-world impact.
“We now have a unique opportunity to establish Pennington Biomedical as the research institution in the world for metabolic surgery and to bring bariatric clinical research trials to the people of Louisiana.”
