Pennington Biomedical is a research institution affiliated with Louisiana State University, founded in 1988, that conducts groundbreaking research to better understand and treat obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and dementia. The center specializes in basic, clinical, and population research and serves as a national leader in health innovation.
When Pennington Biomedical pursued an expansion to establish a new bariatric and metabolic surgery center, the organization looked at the Baton Rouge Area for its clinical excellence, academic infrastructure, and strong public-private partnerships. In 2019, Pennington Biomedical selected Baton Rouge, LA, for its $5.9 million Bariatric and Metabolic Institute in partnership with Our Lady of the Lake. This new center created 55 direct jobs and 38 indirect jobs and aimed to make Louisiana a global destination for obesity treatment and metabolic health research.
Since opening in March 2022, Metamor has treated over 6,000 new patients, performed 350+ bariatric surgeries, and exceeded initial engagement expectations by more than 50%.
In recognition of its transformative impact on the region’s health economy, Pennington Biomedical received BRAC’s 2019 Project of the Year, highlighting its role in advancing medical innovation in the Capital Region.
