IBM Baton Rouge When IBM pursued an expansion with a new technology services center, the company looked at Baton Rouge for its higher education resources, growing tech workforce, and revitalized urban environment. In 2013, IBM selected downtown Baton Rouge for its new $55 million IBM Services Center, creating 800 direct jobs and marking the largest software development project ever attracted to Louisiana. IBM’s Baton Rouge operation focuses on application development, system integration, and cloud and data services to meet the evolving needs of domestic clients.
State and local leaders — including Louisiana Economic Development (LED), the City of Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, and LSU — delivered a custom package of workforce and infrastructure solutions. Key initiatives included a $14 million investment to expand LSU’s computer science program and launch the Geaux Digital Louisiana initiative to grow the state’s tech talent pipeline. IBM also benefited from LED FastStart® workforce services, $29.5 million in performance-based workforce and operations grants, and a newly built state-of-the-art riverfront development managed by Baton Rouge Area Foundation affiliates.
Building a High-Tech Workforce in Baton Rouge
Since opening in 2015, IBM’s Baton Rouge Client Innovation Center has surpassed its original goals, employing more than 800 workers and hiring over 300 LSU graduates. The center has expanded its focus to cutting-edge technologies like AI and cloud computing, with IBM’s watsonx platform now playing a major role in its operations.
“There were a couple of factors in why we chose Baton Rouge. First is, we have some history with LSU… and the second factor is the very strong partnership we’ve developed with the state and academic institutions, which is just tremendous.”
