square-foot state-of-the-art facility
Amazon BTR1, East Baton Rouge Parish When Amazon pursued a location for its new robotics fulfillment center, the company looked at the Baton Rouge area for its strategic location, strong workforce pipeline, and opportunities for redevelopment. In 2021, Amazon selected Baton Rouge, LA, for its $200 million state-of-the-art robotics fulfillment center, BTR1, strategically located at the former Cortana Mall site. This 3.4 million-square-foot facility, opened in August 2024, has become a cornerstone of economic revitalization in the region.
This major investment has included multiple phases. In 2021, Honeywell announced a capacity-doubling expansion of the site to meet rising global demand for Solstice® ze (1234ze), used in foam insulation, propellants, refrigeration, and air conditioning. In 2022, the facility became the company’s first to manufacture Solstice® Air (HFO-1234ze(E) cGMP), a near-zero GWP medical propellant being used in next-generation respiratory inhalers through a partnership with AstraZeneca.
A Catalyst for the Florida Corridor
Since officially opening in August 2024, Amazon’s Baton Rouge Fulfillment Center has transformed into the company’s most advanced robotics facility, employing over 1,000 full-time jobs. At BTR1, cutting-edge robotics technology, including Hercules, Pegasus, and Robin robots, works alongside employees to efficiently move, sort, and ship tens of thousands of packages daily. The facility processes about 90,000 packages a day, scaling up to 300,000 during peak seasons like holidays and Prime Day. While the center does not ship directly to consumers, it plays a crucial role in Amazon’s regional logistics network, feeding packages to nearby sortation and delivery centers. The establishment of BTR1 has spurred significant economic activity in the surrounding area and serves as an anchor for the Florida Corridor Master Plan, a strategic initiative aimed at revitalizing one of Baton Rouge’s key commercial corridors.
In recognition of its leadership in innovation and sustainable manufacturing, Honeywell has received widespread industry recognition. The global adoption of its Solstice® products has already avoided more than 250 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions—equal to removing 52 million cars from the road for a year.
