When ExxonMobil pursued an expansion through its Polypropylene Growth Project, the company looked at the Baton Rouge Area for its established workforce, collaborative training programs, and longstanding community partnerships. In 2019, ExxonMobil selected Baton Rouge, LA, for its more than $500 million expansion at the Polyolefins Plant. The project aimed to double polypropylene production—used in lightweight automotive parts and consumer goods—by adding 450,000 metric tons per year of new capacity. It created 65 new direct jobs, supported 219 new indirect jobs, and generated 600 construction jobs, increasing local employment and production capacity.
Building the Future Workforce with VR and Data
Since the announcement, ExxonMobil has launched operations at the facility, trained workers using virtual reality modules developed in partnership with local firms, and collaborated with area schools to install VR labs for workforce development. The facility’s innovative use of data and simulation tools has been adopted by Baton Rouge Community College and the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), further expanding the project’s regional impact.
