A Regional Opportunity Engine
CareerBridge is an internship initiative that provides paid, high-quality opportunities for Capital Region youth. The program focuses on skill-building, real-world experience, and equitable access to career pathways.
Program Overview
National data shows that only 2% of high school students complete internships—rarely exceeding 20% even in the top states. In contrast, the Capital Region placed over 700 students in internships in summer 2025, partnering with 114 businesses across industries like healthcare, IT, public service, and education. This 6.9% participation rate puts the region ahead of national averages and positions it as a leader in youth workforce development.
Interns gain hands-on experience in professional settings, develop workplace and technical skills, and receive guidance from mentors. Many participants also earn high school credit or career certifications while contributing to meaningful projects. With increased business participation, internship opportunities now reach more neighborhoods and schools, helping close equity gaps and strengthen the region’s future workforce.
How CareerBridge Works

We have served as a host site for interns two summers in a row now, and we highly recommend it! It was an incredible experience, not just for Ja’Kyril and Kyler, but also for the company. You get the chance to help the intern develop new skills while developing young talent, and contributing to the future workforce, as it helps build a potential talent pipeline for the future. Interns gain valuable experience with your company’s processes and deliverables, which becomes a strategic advantage if you choose to hire them as employees or bring them back as college interns after graduation.

Hosting interns brings a breath of fresh air to our organization and having Brookelyn as our intern this summer was fantastic. It was great having friendly, eager young faces who genuinely wanted to learn about our operations and how we serve the community. I especially appreciated their questions. It challenged me to pivot, think more broadly, and consider perspectives I hadn’t before. It became a two-way learning experience, and we truly grew together. Over time, we have learned that preparation and planning ahead are key to a successful internship experience. This program is about real-life and real world experiences, not busy work, so the role needs to be intrinsically valuable. As trust develops, it leads to increased responsibility.

Bringing on interns can be rewarding for both your business and the interns themselves. It’s a chance to invest in emerging talent while gaining fresh perspectives and support on your projects. Our intern Earlishia this summer was a great example of this. To get the most out of the program, I recommend treating the internship as a two-way learning experience. Provide clear expectations, meaningful work, and mentorship opportunities. In return, you’ll often find that interns are eager, adaptable, and can bring valuable energy to your team. Just be sure you have the time and structure in place to support their development. It’s an investment, but one that can pay off in productivity and long-term relationships. Impacts abound when working with interns—from productivity, day-by-day support, special project tasks, culture and energy, and in addition to the benefits to the scholars, our employees also grow professionally by learning to mentor and lead.
