Methanex supplies methanol — a clear, biodegradable ingredient used in everything from windshield washer fluid and recyclable plastic bottles to plywood floors, silicone sealants, and synthetic fibers. The company specializes in methanol production and serves major international markets in industries ranging from manufacturing to clean energy.
When Methanex pursued an expansion with new production facilities, the company looked at the Baton Rouge area for its skilled workforce, competitive natural gas prices, robust logistics infrastructure, and strong chemical manufacturing ecosystem. In 2012 and 2013, Methanex selected Geismar, in Ascension Parish, for a combined $1.1 billion investment, relocating two methanol plants from Chile to Ascension Parish. These projects created 165 new direct jobs, significantly strengthening the region’s position as a global center for methanol production.
Since the initial announcements, Methanex has continued to grow in the Capital Region. In 2019, the company broke ground on a third methanol plant in Geismar, a $1.3 billion to $1.4 billion project that will create 62 additional direct jobs. Upon its completion, Methanex’s Geismar complex will become one of the largest methanol production sites in the world, with a combined capacity of approximately 4 million metric tons per year.
