Baton Rouge, LA (August 29, 2024) – The Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) yesterday announced winners of its Diversity Star Award at its third annual Economic Inclusion Symposium presented by Dow. Capital Area United Way received the award for the small organization category, and Dow received the award for the large organization category.
BRAC created the Diversity Star Award with a goal of highlighting exceptional business practices taking place in the Capital Region that leverage the value of diversity in organizations. The award seeks to honor and recognize regional businesses that have championed diversity and inclusion at their businesses or in the community.
“The Diversity Star Award is BRAC’s way of shining a light on the outstanding efforts within our community that prioritize inclusivity and equity,” said Erin Monroe, chair of BRAC’s Economic Inclusion Council and Cox Communications market vice president. “This year, we are proud to honor Capital Area United Way and Dow for their exemplary leadership and commitment to fostering a culture where diversity is not just welcomed but celebrated. Their dedication to creating inclusive corporate environments not only strengthens their organizations but also enriches the entire Capital Region.”
Capital Area United Way was selected for its commitment to diversity and inclusion guiding and directing its employment practices, agency and program funding, volunteer recruitment, and service delivery. Specific programming includes its dedication to equitable hiring practices with a leadership team that is 70% women, and its goals for grantee/vendor diversification.
“On behalf of the Capital Area United Way team, we thank BRAC as we are honored to receive this award. It is truly fulfilling to work with such a diverse and intentional team that work passionately to make sure that we produce equitable outcomes for our ALICE community,” said Bre’Anna Perkins, CAUW assistant director of community impact. “CAUW believes that all people should feel empowered to achieve their full potential, regardless of race, creed, color, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, gender, age, or national origin. We understand that to do the work, it first begins with a diverse and well-informed team leading the work.”
Dow was selected for its exceptional diversity, equity and inclusion practices within the company and the community. Specific practices include it’s executive inclusion, diversity and equity objective, which aims to improve the representation of people of color at the associate vice president level by 5% and the representation of women at the director level by 2%, and its supplier diversity team, which offer programs including the Small Business Leadership Academy, certification assistance, and minority business mentoring.
“We are incredibly proud to receive this award. Our team reflects Dow’s commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity within our local community,” said Wes Heinlein, Dow Louisiana operations site leader. “From our diverse supplier program designed to support and sustain local businesses to our apprenticeship program developing a skilled workforce, we are dedicated to making the community where we live and work a place where everyone can grow and thrive. The Diversity Star Award is an example of what it means to #SeekTogether. By bringing unique perspectives to the table, we can create innovative solutions for a sustainable world.”
