BATON ROUGE, La. (July 16, 2024) — The Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) today released the following statement on the East Baton Rouge Parish School Superintendent Search.
The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board is at a pivotal crossroads, holding the immense responsibility of appointing a new superintendent. It is imperative that each board member now fulfills their duty to our students, parents, and community by making a decisive vote. We firmly believe it is time for a proven change agent capable of addressing long-standing challenges in our school system. We urge the board to act with the urgency and commitment our community deserves—the future of our educational system depends on it, and the time to act is now.
BRAC’s priorities for K-12 education in the Capital Region:
- Expand Early Childhood Education: Prioritize the expansion of universal Pre-K-3 programs to ensure every child receives a strong foundation in their critical early years. Early childhood education is essential for cognitive, emotional, and social development, setting the stage for lifelong learning and success.
- Expand Quality School Options: Enhance the availability and quality of school options available to families. Providing diverse educational options ensures students can find and thrive in an environment that best suits their learning styles and aspirations.
- Prioritize Industry Certifications and Dual Enrollment: Expand opportunities for students to earn valuable industry certifications and increase their participation in dual enrollment programs. Enhance curricular pathways that lead to high-wage, high-demand careers and align the curriculum with the needs of the regional market, so students develop the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a competitive economy.
- Bolster Work-Based Learning: Increase the availability of paid, work-based learning opportunities to imbue students with real-world experience and technical skills.
- Rethink Facility Management: Actively manage school facilities to ensure they are utilized efficiently. Unused and underutilized properties should be repurposed to benefit the community as centers of community services or neighborhood development projects.
- Autonomy in Leadership: The superintendent should be free to make key personnel and financial decisions without micromanagement while establishing and upholding a strict accountability regime that ensures all schools and leaders achieve and maintain high standards.
The school system belongs to our entire community, and its success will impact all of us for generations to come. The business community remains unwavering in its dedication to fostering student achievement and success. We stand ready to serve as thought partners, bringing innovative ideas and strategies to enhance educational outcomes. Furthermore, we are devoted to cultivating a regional economy that supports students throughout their academic journeys and into their careers.
