Origin Materials is a U.S.-based business founded in 2008 that specializes in carbon-negative materials, leading the global transition to sustainable, renewable manufacturing. The company develops technology to convert sustainable wood residues and other biomass into precursors used to make packaging, textiles, apparel, tires, fuels, and more. Origin Materials serves customers in the U.S. and international markets across multiple industries.
When Origin Materials pursued a major biomass manufacturing facility, the company looked at the Baton Rouge Area for its skilled workforce, abundant local timber supply, access to river, rail and highway logistics, and a competitive incentives package. In 2022, Origin Materials selected Geismar, LA, for its $250 million biomass manufacturing facility. This new facility will create 200 direct new jobs and generate 857 indirect jobs, positioning the Capital Region as a leader in sustainable materials manufacturing.
Since the announcement, Origin Materials has secured a LED Certified Site at the 150-acre Parks Geismar location, is progressing toward construction which began in mid-2023, and expects mechanical completion and operation by mid-2025. The company has also benefited from workforce training support through LED FastStart and a suite of state incentives including tax abatements and performance-based awards.
